Artificial intelligence is already transforming the way we teach and the way our students learn. More and more tools now make it possible to adapt content, automate processes, and provide truly personalised learning support. At the same time, however, its growing presence raises important questions about privacy, equity, and the vital role of our teachers. As such, it is essential that we analyse the opportunities and challenges AI presents to understand its true value for our school community.

 

THE BENEFITS OF AI IN EDUCATION:

Personalised Learning

Every student learns differently, and AI can help us provide an experience that is better suited to each individual. The adaptation of content according to diverse learning needs supports the commitment to ensuring that every classroom is an inclusive learning environment. This approach makes it possible to:

  • Adapt activities according to each student’s prior knowledge and understanding.
  • Reinforce content in areas which may be less accessible to some.
  • Offer new challenges to those who progress more quickly.

Improved Student Assessment and Monitoring

AI can analyse results and performance trends to provide our teachers with a more holistic understanding of each student’s learning journey. If a system detects patterns of low performance, lack of participation, or repeated mistakes, it can serve as an alert, allowing teachers to respond thoughtfully and promptly. This enables us to:

  • Identify misconceptions.
  • Make informed educational decisions about support requirements.
  • Identify specific educational needs earlier.

Optimisation of Teachers’ Tasks

AI can be a valuable support tool, helping to optimise our teachers’ daily organisation and workload management. From correcting exercises to collating data, many of the administrative responsibilities that can weigh on our teaching staff can become less burdensome. This means our teachers can dedicate more time to creativity in lesson design and to enhancing their teaching practice itself—which is where their true expertise shines.

 

THE CHALLENGES OF AI IN EDUCATION:

Data Protection and Privacy

Many tools collect information about student performance, behaviour, or study habits, so it is essential that we guarantee safe and transparent use of these technologies. As such, our teachers must exercise appropriate care when using AI and:

  • Know what data is being collected.
  • Understand what it is being used for.
  • Limit access to that information.
  • Ensure it is handled responsibly and in line with legislation and policy.

Technological Dependency

Education cannot rely solely on automated responses or intelligent platforms, because learning also involves dialogue, reflection, creativity, and human connection. Technology should be a support to learning, not a substitute for the quality of our classroom teaching. The relationship between teacher and student remains at the heart of lifelong learning.

Digital Divide

Not all students have equal access to devices, internet connectivity, or technological skills, and this can increase inequality if it is not addressed responsibly. For the impact of AI in education to be positive, its implementation must be accompanied by genuine measures that promote equity and inclusion for all our learners.

Ethics and Responsible Use

Artificial intelligence also requires careful reflection on ethics and responsible use. It is essential that our students are taught how to use these tools critically and with respect for authorship, understanding that AI does not always provide correct or neutral answers—and that any use of AI must be acknowledged and transparent.

 

AI at ELIS

Earlier this school year, Cognita announced a strategic partnership with Flint AI, which is designed to bring thoughtful, well-tested AI tools into our students’ learning experiences. Through this collaboration, the ELIS schools have gained access to safe, high-quality technology that can help our teachers personalise lessons and better understand our students’ learning needs. The goal is simple and clear: not to replace teachers, but to support them and create even more engaging, effective, and future-ready classrooms.

All of our teaching staff have received comprehensive training on the safe use of AI in the classroom, as well as dedicated sessions to learn about Flint AI in detail.

The introduction of Flint AI to our older students has been planned thoughtfully and thoroughly, with a strong emphasis on safety, transparency, and positive impact on learning, and always in accordance with regional and national guidance. In line with our commitment to providing the best quality education for your children, at the ELIS schools we aim to ensure that all technology used in our classrooms is purposeful, intentional, and genuinely beneficial to students. Our teachers will continue to have the very best possible support to guide and inspire our learners, and AI will aid that mission—never replace it.
